Went to pay my bill today, fully expecting the price to be bumped up a tad, with my internet going from $60/mo to $65. Nope - they still had the $5 discount in place but now want to charge me $20 for video streaming. Uh, no.
When I signed up for the streaming they said it wouldn’t affect my bill much since I was already paying full price for internet; the $20 price was for those that had the discounted introductory rate for internet. All I had to pay were the extra fees and taxes that boosted the bill by about $4, and I was OK with that. It really isn’t worth the $20 to me, so I guess I’ll have to call and bitch and complain and get some sort of temporary relief. I hate that I have to go through this crap every few months.
The streaming is interesting since I get access to on demand stuff on the various channels I receive via apps and websites. However, there is only one package of channels available, even though they are fully capable of transmitting others as they have demonstrated on various holidays. I was willing to pay them more to get some other channels, but they don’t offer that to streaming customers. And I’m not signing up for a full cable TV package, which was probably their intent with the limited stuff on streaming. I actually liked my cable company until now, sorta, but no more. This has to stop.
I guess it’s time to fire up the ol’ VPN. ;)

My experience with getting rid of regular Charter cable tv was I had to tell them straight up I was canceling it, no dicking around with “what’s up with this price, this is stupid,” just “I want to turn off my tv service.”
At that point they’d transfer me to the retention department who would go through the song & dance of asking what channels I like or not, try to get me to pick a lower tier package, offer a discount, etc. I actually bit on something that would reduce the price the first time rather than cut the cord but went back through the same whole song and dance a couple months later. I had to tell them multiple different times, “I do not want to change my service, I want to get rid of it entirely” before they actually turned it off.
Not sure if they’d put you through the same BS for turning off a $20 video streaming charge (I assume this is Charter’s own Spectrum TV streaming service) but you could at least try the same thing of just telling them to turn it off and letting the retention folks wheel & deal.
Otherwise there are other better services like Playstation Vue, Youtube TV, Hulu live, etc. Maybe Dish Anywhere but I hate Dish Network as a company more than the general level I hate companies, so while they were the first player in this space, I hesitate to recommend them.

I’m confused with how they can differentiate between streaming and downloading content? I use amazon prime for watching movies and such. Wouldn’t it just come across as downloading data for an hour or two? And actually, I have the option to download certain selections as well, so that would theoretically negate the whole streaming deal anyway.
